Where to Sell or Donate Clutter?

As a professional organizer I am always asked: "How can I get rid of my clutter after I am done organizing?" So here are some resources to help you.

If you have items you want to donate:

Appliances:http://www.geappliances.com/ the donation center here lists national charities willing to cart away old models, free of charge as long as they still work well.

Books:The Global Literacy Project Inc (http://www.glpinc.org/)
Darien Book Aid (http://www.dba.darien.org/)
International Book Project (http://www.intlbookproject.org/)
*All send books to libraries, schools, prisons, hospitals and communities to promote literacy. Donors pay shipping.

Computers:

Computers for Kids (http://www.c4k.org/)
Computers for Schools (http://www.pcsforschools.org/)
The National Cristina Foundation (http://www.cristina.org/) will take your old hardware, refurbish it, and distribute it to economically disadvantaged youths in the US.

Furniture:
http://www.excessaccess.com/ matches your giveaways with nonprofits in your area that need them. A $10 registration fee allows you to post your offerings and view organizations’ wish lists. Recipients take care of the pickup.

http://www.inkindex.com/ offers free Internet matching services. Type in your area code in the Individual Donors section, and a list of goods requested by local nonprofits will pop up. You contact them and arrange to drop it off or have them pick it up.

http://www.giftsforsight.org/ will take almost anything-even old cars and boats. They are sold to fund medical research. Call 800-329-6441

Misc.
http://www.justjunk.com/
http://www.1800gotjunk.com/ a nationwide service that carts away just about anything. They have even been known to clean up a garage or yard afterward. The fee is based on volume.

Recycling:http://www.earth911.org/
http://www.redo.org/ both give you a list of local recycling centers.
